Q?

Am I insured for the vehicles?

A.

Yes, we provide fully comprehensive insurance for all our drivers & vehicles. We do additionally require that all our clients have adequate travel insurance in place prior to departure.

Q?

Does Peru Safari offer ATOL cover?

A.

By law, every UK travel company which sells flights is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. This covers all overseas air holidays where a flight AND accommodation are booked together. This was brought about by airlines/ travel companies going bust, leaving the client with no financial recourse.

At Peru Safari, our guests book their own flights through ATOL protected airlines such as British Airways, or through our ATOL protected flight partner. Therefore, we are not required to have an ATOL in place as we are a small specialized "in country" tour operator. However, our UK registered company (UK Companies Registration Number 8124873) adheres to and exceeds the standards imposed by Trading Standards, & the Office of Fair Trading.

We stipulate that all our clients MUST have an adequate travel insurance policy in place prior to travel (we keep a copy on file), and you can easily obtain identical (or better) financial compensation coverage to an ATOL by using a good travel policy.

We highly recommend, and most of our clients choose the AXA Premier Policy  http://www.axa.co.uk/insurance/personal/travel

It takes 2 minutes online, to take out a single trip policy that will typically cost you less than £50 and covers you for any type of cancellation up to £5000 per person, as well as adventure sports such as white water rafting.

Remember, only half of all holidays now booked in the UK are a complete package from a travel agent, so while ATOL works well for a conventional package holiday, if you book your flights, accommodation and other services separately, you don't have the same protection - so cannot rely on the ATOL / ABTA schemes.

We are always available via e mail on info@perusafari.com or via telephone on 01744 889819 if you have any questions about this or any other aspect of our tours.

Q?

Do I need to pay a security deposit to drive the vehicle?

A.

Yes, you do need to pay a £1,100 fully refundable damage security deposit. This is to cover the insurance excess should you cause negligent damage to the vehicle or lose any of the equipment issued with the vehicle (such as 2 way radios etc.). This is the same system you would encounter in the UK if you were hiring a camper van or motorhome.  In such a case, we would provide an estimate for the loss/damage to you via e mail, and deduct that cost prior to refunding the balance of your refundable security deposit. We process refund within 7 days of the completion of the holiday.

Q?

Will we need plug adapters

A.

Yes, Peru uses 220v 2 pin plugs so you will need an international adapter. Its also worth noting at a couple of the locations we use, there is no facility to plug in a hair dryer, and water supply can on rare occasions be sporadic. Power cuts are also possible at the more remote locations so a torch is essential.

Q?

How do I book?

A.

An initial deposit of £300 per person is required to confirm the booking. The deposit is normally non-refundable. The remaining balance + refundable damage security deposit is payable 12 weeks before the departure when your full confirmation and pre trip confirmation is sent to you.

Q?

How many guests per vehicle?

A.

For self -drive vehicles maximum 4 persons. For Chauffeur driven vehicles, max 2 persons.

Q?

A.

Yes, our Driver will collect you at the airport, and our Guide will meet you when you arrive at your hotel in Lima, and will escort the small convoy throughout the trip in our lead vehicle, with an assistant. This ensures your safety and security throughout.

Q?

A.

The trip is suitable for all ages over 7yrs. All drivers must between 25 – 70 years of age and have held a full European Community or US driving licence for 2 years. Drivers aged below 25 years or over 70 years may still be able to drive but there will be an insurance surcharge.

Q?

How is driving in Peru?

A.

In Lima the answer is awful, but once out of the city traffic becomes scarcer and the driving far more enjoyable. The roads we will drive range from mildly challenging off road 20%, to dirt tracks 20% to tarmac highways 60%. Peruvians drive on the right (most of the time). Some of the roads are very high, and immensely spectacular. If you are nervous driving in the UK or Europe, then this trip is probably not for you.

Q?

What clothes should we bring?

A.

Peru offers up 28 separate climates, so be prepared for cold nights in the Andes, hot days in the Desert and heavy tropical rain in the Jungle. We will send you an essentials list with your booking confirmation 12 weeks prior to your trip.

Q?

Can we cook with the vehicle?

A.

Yes, all our vehicles are supplied with cooker and water as well as basic field kitchen kit, so a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of toast are never far away.

Q?

Can you pick us up from the airport?

A.

With pleasure.  Private Airport transfers are included

Q?

Do we need a visa?

A.

No tourist visa needed for citizens from most of the countries in the EEC, the Americas, or Western Europe, but beware; lost immigration forms carry a penalty of US $90.

Q?

How will the weather be?

A.

The Coast: There are two seasons; Summer (from December to March), with temperatures reaching 27°C (80°F), and winter (from April to November). The northern coast is sunny all year round and in summer temperatures reach 35°C (95°F).

Highlands: Dry and mild weather with two well defined seasons; Summer (April to October) with sunny days, very cold nights and scarce rain. The Rainy season (November to March). In the highlands there is a clear temperature difference under the sun than in the shade, and there are severe temperature changes on the same day, varying from 20°C (68°F) to 2°C (35°F).

Jungle: With humid and tropical weather, the jungle has two seasons. The summer, or dry season (April to October), with sunny days and temperatures higher than 30°C (86°F) and a rainy season (November to March), with heavy showers and large river flows.

The temperatures are higher in the Peru summer, but the nights can get very cold. Deciding when to visit Peru can be difficult purely because the country covers three major geographic and climatic zones. Very generally-The country experiences two seasons: a wet season from November through March and a dry season from April through October. The dry season is also the best time to visit the jungle. For visits to the coast, however, the best time is November through March when the weather is hot.

Q?

Currency?

A.

Official currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol (S/.) but the U.S. Dollar is accepted in many locations.

Its possible to exchange foreign currency (U.S.D and Euros) at hotels, banks, and authorized exchange offices. ATM machines can be found in most major cities in Peru.

Q?

How safe is Peru?

A.

Just take the same basic precautions for personal safety as you would in any tourist destinations the world over, Don’t leave personal items unattended in public areas, and don’t display large amounts of money or valuable jewellery.

Q?

How’s the food?

A.

Most gastronomes agree that Peru is fast becoming a leader amongst the highest echelons of world cuisine. Peruvian Cuisine is characterized by its wide variety of traditional dishes using the freshest ingredients, particularly seafood. You can find all kind of restaurants to discover this mixture of flavours: from sophisticated in the cities to very simple in the countryside.

Q?

What about communications?

A.

Most hotel properties we use will have Wi FI. We have two way radios in all the vehicles. We also have a satellite phone on board the guide vehicle for emergencies and voice and data usage can be rented (see your guide for current rates). Our on board GPS will also send a signal to our website so that family and friends can follow your progress on our South America map.

Q?

Any health concerns?

A.

Don’t drink tap water and take care in more rural/rustic locations with uncooked vegetables/salads– purify or buy bottled water. Consult your doctor for the latest advice regarding regional health risks/immunizations.
