DAY 1 (LIMA)
Evening time arrival in Lima and private pre-arranged transfer from the airport to meet your guide at the hotel. The Casa Andina Hotel is situated in the upmarket Miraflores district of Lima, with time for dinner, a stroll along the seafront park and and a good night’s sleep prior to the start of your Peru Holiday.
DAY 2 (LIMA-Tarma)
We start with a breakfast briefing at the hotel, prior to joining our 4x4 vehicles for the early drive out of the city to head into central Andes of Peru, an area of mighty parallel valleys and mountain passes.
After a steep climb through beautiful scenery, we eventually reach the Ticlio pass at more than 4,800m in altitude. The railway cuts a perilous path alongside, and is the highest standard-gauge railway in the world. The railroad was built to service the lead and zinc mines at La Oroya, a chaotic mining center situated high in the Andes.
Late afternoon we will descend to the flower growing centre of Peru, and colonial backwater, Tarma. Set in a lush valley with towering Andean peaks above, the climate here is generally warm, sunny and dry.
A warm welcome awaits us in the grounds of the Hacienda Santa Maria, a rustic 17th century lodge, with a delicious home cooked dinner and a relaxing evening in front of a roaring log fire.
DAY 3 (TARMA-HACIENDA)
Tarma, known as the “Pearl of the Andes” offers beautiful scenery, fine old haciendas, good food, and the deepest cave in South America.
Also known as the City of Flowers, Tarma serves as a central axis in any trip through the Andes. We spend a relaxing morning at the Hacienda with breakfast and briefing, before heading up to Tarmatambo, a typical Andean village a short climb out from Tarma.
The route takes us high into the mountains to a deserted ruined Inca palace and to one of the oldest churches in Peru dating back to 1539 and which still has the original signature of Pizzaro inside.
We then head off road for some 4x4 adventure into the mountains for a picnic high above the Tarma valley, before we return to the Hacienda for dinner and a warming Pisco liquor.
DAY 4 (TARMA-Pampa Hermosa)
From Tarma we descend steeply from the high Andes, and soon, thick misted forests and waterfalls begin to cover the precipitous valley walls, while sounds of exotic birds fill the cloud forest that lines the route.
The temperature rises sharply as does the humidity, and in one short drive you will have drastically changed climates, and ecological zones. The town of San Ramon has a frontier feel about it, and here we leave the tarmac and head off road into the Jungle, along the banks of the River Ulcamayo.
This is not a track for the faint hearted. Vertical drops offer views many hundreds of feet below to the thundering river, as the steep track ascends high into the Jungle that makes up the remote Pampa Hermosa Reserve, deep in the heart of the cloud forest.
This little known and little visited area features in the “rough guides GREAT ESCAPES -500 best travel experiences” and the 28,000 acre rain forest preserve is a mecca for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
A dinner under camp lights with the noises of the Jungle around, makes a fitting end to the day, and start spotting around the camp fire sets a fitting diminuendo to end the day, before retiring to your luxury cabana.
DAY 5 (Pampa Hermosa)
Blessed with lush vegetation, the area is home to a variety of rare colourful birds, and mammals. The lodge sits at the base of Pampa Hermosa Reserve, home to some of the last undisturbed hardwood forest in Peru.
It is surrounded by canyons, fresh water springs and clear creeks. Scenic views include the Ulcumayo River gorge and over ten beautiful waterfalls that rush down between huge trees (a great place for refreshing shower!).
A 20-minute hike will take you to the ancient, stone formations of the Puente Chávez and to the “Danzadero del Gallito de las Rocas”.
One of the areas main attractions takes place at the Dancing Spot of the Little Rooster of the Rocks, where the males of this rare, protected bird, dance to attract their females. This exciting “show of nature” is on the must see list for bird enthusiasts worldwide.
A further 2 hours or more into the Jungle takes you to giant 600 year old cedar woods and the chance to see monkeys, deer, small jungle tigers, and wild boar.
Fifty-nine species of birds have been identified in the area as well as beautiful butterflies and vividly coloured frogs. That night we enjoy an al fresco dinner back at the jungle lodge.
DAY 6 (Pampa Hermosa-Tarma)
We spend a relaxing morning in the Jungle with the option to take a swim under the waterfalls,or spot wildlife in the nearby forest on a guided hike. By the river near to the lodge you can frequently spot river otters, monkeys and deer, along with the amazing bird life.
If you are feeling energetic you can swim the river or do a 200ft abseil with our guides down one of the nearby waterfalls, which should sharpen your appetite for lunch.
In the afternoon, we take the narrow and challenging 4x4 track descending down towards San Ramon and back to civilization, before taking the steep mountain road back to Tarma and the Hacienda for dinner.
DAY 7 (Tarma-Lima)
We return to Lima after breakfast via transfer van, breaking up the steep 5 hour descent with a refreshment stop. Once in Lima, we can have some free time to enjoy a typical Peruvian seafood lunch, check out the busy local craft market, or stroll the clifftop Larcomar centre, that offers opportunities to purchase souvenir silver, ceramics, and Alpaca garments. Flights generally leave evening time for Europe after a fantastic 7 night Peru Holiday that you will never forget.
